Passenger vehicles can be convenient, but they make up 10% of the world's carbon dioxide emissions, which are detrimental to our planet's health. Reducing car use lowers emissions, traffic, and air pollution.
The CTA accounts for only 2.94% of all on-road greenhouse gas emissions, making it a great low-emission transportation option.
Other modes of climate-friendly transportation include biking, walking, and carpooling.
In 2022, the CTA presented a report, Charging Forward, in which they outline their plan to fully electrify the entire bus fleet by 2040.
There are many ways to use the CTA and the Metra. The CTA accepts payment through cash (no change provided), contactless credit, or debit cards. You can also purchase a Ventra card through the Ventra app or at a card machine (located at most train stations). Metra tickets can be purchased at Metra stations or through the Ventra app, which also allows you to track trains and buses on your mobile device.
As stated earlier, utilizing bikes is another great way to reduce your carbon footprint, connect with nature, and explore the city! Chicago offers many bike lanes, along with bike rental services, such as Divvy. Above is a map of rental stations.
Biking is a great transportation option, but it can be challenging in the winter. The CTA provides heated stations in many train terminals, that support people who bike and use public transit. During the holidays, you can also visit the CTA holiday train decorated with Christmas themes and posters.
Chicago hosts plenty of winter activities you might want to explore. You can take the Red Line to visit the Christkindlmarket at Lake Station, or take the 29, 65, 66, 124 buses to enjoy the Winter Wonderfest at Navy Pier. (Different version of paragraph above)
